A certified family law specialist is an attorney who has met certain requirements in order to become certified by the State Bar of California’s Board of Legal Specialization as having the required experience and expertise to handle family law matters.
Requirements to Become a Certified Family Law Specialist in California
In order to become a certified family law specialist in California, an attorney must:
- Have been practicing family law extensively for at least five years,

- Complete at least 45 hours of approved continuing education in family law topics every three years,

To maintain certification, a certified specialist must comply with the Standards of Specialist Certification established by the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization. The standards require that Certified Family Law Specialists meet higher standards of experience, education, knowledge, and skill than non-specialists. They are also required to take more Continuing Education courses in their specialty area than non-specialists.
